Eagles to Pick 23rd in the 2023 CHL Import Draft

The OHL’s Erie Otters will have the first overall selection in the 2023 CHL Import Draft that will take place July 5, 2023 at 11am ET.

Your Cape Breton Eagles own the 23rd overall pick after completing a 30-34-3-1 record in 2022-23. The Eagles chose Czech forward Jiri Kulich with the 3rd overall pick in the 2022 CHL Import Draft. Kulich was then selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1st round, 23rd overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Kulich wouldn’t play a game for the Eagles as the Sabres elected to send him to the Rochester Americans in the AHL.

Perhaps the most recent impactful Import Draftee was in 2019 when the Eagles selected forward Ivan Ivan with the 36th overall pick in the CHL Import Draft. Ivan, who just completed his 20-year-old campaign, finished his Eagles career playing 195 games in an Eagles sweater, compiling 78 goals, 103 assists for 181 points; becoming the third-highest scoring import player in Eagles history.

Other highly notable Eagle import draftees in recent years include forward Egor Sokolov, 35th overall in 2017, (and now playing for the Bellville Senators in the AHL), and defenceman Leon Gawanke, 96th overall in 2016, (and now playing for the Manitoba Moose in the AHL).

As was the case a year ago, Russian and Belarusian players will be ineligible for selection in the 2023 CHL Import Draft. For the 2023 CHL Import Draft, players who have been a resident in Russia or Belarus at any time over the past 24 months are ineligible to be drafted. The only exception is a Russian or Belarussian player who was previously drafted by a CHL club and subsequently deleted on or before the cut-down date in 2023.
