Eagles Thank Outgoing 20 Year Old Players

With the unfortunate developments that have caused the cancellation of the 2019-20 QMJHL season, the major junior careers of 20 year old players around the league have come to an end.  The Cape Breton Eagles would like to thank and congratulate Derek Gentile, Shawn Boudrias, and Tyler Hinam for their time and accomplishments playing in the QMJHL.

Derek Gentile grew up in Sydney watching Eagles games and would fulfill his destiny by finishing his major junior career with his home town team.  This was Gentile’s fifth year in the league.  After being drafted by Québec, he spent two and a half years with the Remparts and then one season in Charlottetown before coming home to Cape Breton.  This winter saw Gentile join an elite club- having played 300 games in the QMJHL.

In total Gentile collected 228 points in 310 games, with 79 points in 80 games as an Eagle.  In January he was named Cape Breton captain and wore the “C” for the second half of this season.  In 2019-20, Derek scored a career high 25 goals.

Gentile wasn’t the only new face to arrive in Sydney during the 2018-19 trade period.  Shawn Boudrias also played five seasons in the QMJHL, beginning as a first round draft pick of the Charlottetown Islanders, before being traded to Gatineau where he would play against the Eagles in the 2017 playoffs.  Shawn spent the last season and a half of his “Q” career with the Eagles, notching 95 points in 85 games (with 226 points in 286 games throughout his junior career).

Boudrias, whose NHL rights belong to Minnesota after being chosen in the 2018 draft, scored 79 points in 59 games this season- 11th overall in league scoring.  Shawn placed second in the QMJHL in shots on goal with 163.

Another Christmas time deal this season rounded out the trio of 20 year old forwards for the Eagles as Tyler Hinam joined the team on January 6th.  He came to the Eagles after spending three and a half years with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.   And he brought with him a championship pedigree, notching points in both the President’s Cup winning and Memorial Cup winning games as the Huskies won both titles last season.

During his 21 games with the Eagles, Hinam collected 20 points.  Thought his QMJHL career Tyler posted 172 points in 241 games.

The Cape Breton Eagles would like to wish Derek, Shawn and Tyler the best in whatever comes next in their careers.  Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!
