The Cape Breton Eagles are back on home ice for a return encounter with the Saint John Sea Dogs this evening. Tonight’s game is a rematch from Wednesday night when the Eagles dropped the Dogs 7-2 in Saint John- pushing the Eagles win streak to six games.
Coming into tonight’s game the Eagles are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 23-13-3 (14-6-1 at home). The Eagles hold two games in hand on third place in Rimouski, and three games in hand on the Charlottetown team they are tied with.
Saint John is sixth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 20-20-1 (10-10-1 on the road.)
The Eagles used a dominant first period to secure the win on Wednesday, opening up a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes and chasing Saint John starting goaltender Zachary Bouthillier from the net. Egor Sokolov had a very successful return, scoring his second hat trick of the season (and adding an assist). Despite missing time to play for Russia at the World Juniors, Sokolov is third in the league with 55 points. Adam McCormick had three points as well in the victory.
In picking up the win in goal, Kevin Mandolese continued his statistically impressive season. Coming into tonight’s game he is second in the QMJHL in both save percentage (919) and goals against (2.36)
Saint John will look for a big night from import Maxim Cajkovic, who was held scoreless Wednesday in his first game after representing Slovakia at the World Juniors. Prior to the tournament he had reeled off three consecutive multipoint games for the Sea Dogs. This season much off Saint John’s offence has been generated from the blueline- William Villeneuve and Jérémie Poirier are second and third in scoring among defensemen in the QMJHL this season.
This evening’s game goes at 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp Go Eagles Go!
