Eagles Edged By Islanders 3-1 In Charlottetown

NOTES FROM THE GAME
– Marcus Kearsey scored the only goal of the opening period, giving a Charlottetown a lead they wouldn’t surrender in a 3-1 win over the Eagles.

– The lone Eagle breakthrough came on the power play in the third period as Jacob Newcombe scored with assists to Samuel Johnson & Ivan Ivan.

– Jakob Robillard stopped 26 of 27 shots in the win, while Oliver Satny turned aside 32 of 35 in the loss.

The Eagles had an early opportunity when Charlottetown’s Owen Hollingsworth found himself in the penalty box, but Charlottetown killed the penalty off. The Isles found the only goal of the opening period when Marcus Kearsey ripped a shot into the top corner over Oliver Satny. The home side held the lead after killing off two more minor penalties in the opening frame.

Charlottetown had a power play carry over to the second period, but were unable to score on that or a later man advantage as well. The Islanders did double their lead at even strength when Owen Hollingsworth ripped a shot by Satny. Premium scoring chances were limited on both sides thanks to tight defense from both teams.

The Eagles found their breakthrough on the power play when Jacob Newcombe ran a screen on a Samuel Johnson shot and Newcombe recorded the goal to put the Eagles on the board. Unfortunately for the Eagles, special teams weren’t in their favour late as Cam Squires was sent off for holding the stick with under four minutes to play.

Cape Breton didn’t allow Charlottetown much in terms of opportunity on the first half of the power play- the best opportunity went to the Eagles, when a potential Ivan Ivan tying goal rung off the post.  Then it was Ross Campbell finding the back of the net with a power play marker on a one timer from Keiran Gallant with just under two minutes to play.

Not long after, the Eagles lifted Satny for an extra attacker, but were then caught with too many men on the ice to send Satny back to the bench and Charlottetown back to the power play.  The Islanders were able to play keep away and skated to a 3-1 victory.

The Eagles will now head back home for their final two home games of the regular season against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Friday night is Irish Night at the Nest! The Eagles will be wearing green jerseys in the support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Four tickets can be purchased for $50 for the Friday night game.
