The Cape Breton Eagles don’t have wait long to try to get payback on the Charlottetown Islanders. Following a 5-2 loss last night to the Islanders, the same two teams will meet again in Sydney this evening.
Charlottetown continued their perfect start to the season- just one of two teams with a 3-0 record in the QMJHL- with all three victories coming on the road. With no 50 point getters returning from last season, the Islanders will look to have offense by committee in 2020-21. And last night’s victory delivered to just that- with five different players scoring goals in addition to Thomas Casey and Lukas Cormier each chipping in two assists.
It was a big night for Brendan McCarthy and Ben Boyd, who each scored their first career goals. The 17 year old Boyd played two games with Charlottetown last year, and is in his first full QMJHL season. The 19 year old McCarthy was playing his first QMJHL game, having signed with Charlottetown after playing with Hawkesbury in Ontario Jr. A. McCarthy played minor hockey with Islanders captain Brett Budgell, who was on the ice to pick up the puck for McCarthy after the goal.
The Eagles received great goaltending on Friday from William Grimard, who made 37 saves on Friday night. Cape Breton have to limit Charlottetown’s chances are being outshot 42-15 last night. The Eagles will look to build on power play success, after scoring on the man advantage for the second straight game last night. The Eagles trio of overagers Nathan Larose, Jarrett Baker, and Shawn Element have been strong this season, all recording points in every game thus far.
Puck drop this evening is at 7 PM. For those who don’t have Eagles tickets, the game will be streamed online available for purchase at qmjhl.neulion.com/qmjhl. You can also hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
