Screaming Eagles Finish Home Stand Against Drakkar
A three game home stand comes to an end today at Centre 200 as the Screaming Eagles have their first meeting of the season against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. The two clubs will meet just twice this season, six days apart, and leg one takes place at the Nest on Sunday.
Like the Screaming Eagles, the Drakkar are icing a younger team this season, and the two squads are separated by just one point. Cape Breton is currently in 13th in the QMJHL, with a record of 17-18-4 (9-8-3 on home ice). Baie-Comeau sits 14th, at 17-18-3, going 8-11-2 on the road.
The nucleus of Baie-Comeau’s roster comes from four 17 year olds drafted in the first round in 2016- forward Gabriel Fortier (drafted 4th), Shawn Element (9th), Edouard St-Laurent (16th) and defenseman Xavier Bouchard (5th). Notable older players on the Drakkar include a pair of NHL draft choices up front, Ivan Chekhovich (San Jose) and D’Artagnan Joly (Calgary). Joly is the younger brother of former Eagle Michael Joly, while Fortier is the younger brother of current Mooseheads captain Maxime Fortier.
Two other names to watch are Jordan Martel and Bradley Lalonde. The 19 year old Martel finds himself 12th in league scoring with 43 points in 38 games. Lalonde is a former Screaming Eagle who, barring a playoff showdown between the two sides, is playing his final game at Centre 200. The 20 year old defenseman played his first two QMJHL seasons in Cape Breton, and was moved from Victoriaville to Baie-Comeau in the off-season. This year he’s produced 25 points in 30 games.
While there is a familiar face in the visiting lineup, there will be unfamiliar faces in the home lineup. Wth the end of the trading period comes new bodies in Eagle uniforms and last night saw 17 year old forward Isiah Campbell make his Cape Breton debut. Expected to play today are 18 year old forward Shaun Miller (11 points in 18 games) and 17 year old defenseman Kyle Havlena (two goals in 19 contests.)
Depth in the Eagles lineup could be crucial after two players left Saturday’s game with injuries- defenseman Noah Laaouan and goaltender Kevin Mandolese, with their status unknown heading to Sunday’s game. The Eagles are for certain missing blueliner Sacha Roy, who will be serving the first game of a three game suspension.
This afternoon’s contest goes at 4 PM. Go Eagles Go!
