Irwin D. Simon, a successful entrepreneur with roots in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, has signed on as the majority shareholder of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.  This change in ownership promises a revitalization of the team and an enhanced fan experience.

Simon first expressed interest in the team in June 2018. After much discussions with the shareholder group, a deal was signed on November 6th, 2018 to make Simon the majority shareholder. He is joined by eight additional local owners: Stuart MacLeod, Andre Cote, Rodney Colbourne, Floyd MacIntyre, Aubrey Rogers, Donnie Sives, Tom MacDonald and Gary Wilson.

“The Eagles have a strong history of community involvement and a loyal fanbase. I want to leverage this support and build on the work that has been done by the previous ownership, while creating new energy around the team,” said Simon. “As a proud Glace Bay native who skated in many youth leagues, nothing would bring me more joy than bringing a championship home to Cape Breton.”

The franchise was brought to Cape Breton in 1997 when a group of business leaders saw an opportunity to bring high caliber hockey back to the Island after the Cape Breton Oilers moved in 1996.

“For the past two decades, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles has been a vital part of our community. Having a major team in Cape Breton helps put us on the map, and I’m so proud that this legacy will continue,” said Stuart MacLeod, Founding Shareholder, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. “As a majority shareholder, Irwin Simon will take new risks and provide the investment needed to build a championship team.”

Irwin Simon is a business executive who founded The Hain Celestial Group, Inc.(NASDAQ: Hain), a leading organic and natural products company in 1993.  As Founder, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Simon led Hain Celestial for 25 years and grew the business to over $3 billion with operations in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East providing consumers with A Healthier Way of Life™. Irwin Simon is also co-owner of St. John’s Edge of the National Basketball League of Canada.
