The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles make their final regular season road trip this evening as they head to the Moncton Coliseum to take on the Moncton Wildcats. It will be a historic night in Moncton as it is the final regular season game at the Coliseum.
It’s also a rematch from exactly one week ago when the same two teams did battle at Centre 200 and the Eagles emerged with a 4-2 victory. Kyle Jessiman shone bright on that night stopping 28 of 30 shots in the win. Four different players scored in the Eagles win, while Mathias Laferrière chipped in an assist in addition to his goal.
This season Cape Breton has fared well against Moncton, winning six of eight meetings between the two sides. They have split the four games in Moncton.
Heading into tonight’s game the Screaming Eagles are 12th in the QMJHL, with a record of 30-27-8 (14-17-2 on the road). The Wildcats are in 15th place at 26-31-8 (16-12-5). Moncton can still finish anywhere from 15th to 13th in the league table, while Cape Breton could finish anywhere from 11th to 13th.
With a victory over Moncton tonight and a Baie-Comeau loss to Rouyn-Noranda, the Eagles could clinch finishing no lower than 12th in the league. In order to pass Gatineau to place 11th, Cape Breton needs to win all three of its games while Gatineau would need to lose all three of theirs. With the Eagles playing three games against a teams below them in the standings and the Olympiques playing strong teams in Victoriaville, Drummondville, Blainvlile-Boisbriand, there is a window of opportunity for movement.
Moncton will be looking to defend their home ice for one final time against the Screaming Eagles, and 20 year old James Phelan will likely be a key if the Cats are to win. The 20 year old is on a seven game point streak, recording twelve points during that stretch and scoring goals in six of the seven games. On the Cape Breton side, 18 year old Peyton Hoyt has discovered a goal scoring touch with four goals in his last three games.
