Eagles Open 2019 With Win In Saint John
The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles are in the win column in 2019. Their first game of the new year on the calendar was a 5-1 victory on Friday night in Saint John.
There was a bit of a slow start to the opening period but when the game opened up it was the Eagles striking first. The first two power plays of the night would go the way of the Sea Dogs, but the Eagles jumped ahead 1-0 on a short handed marker from Derek Gentile. Gentile was a recipient of a pass in front of the net from Declan Smith off the boards and he flipped it by Alex D’Orio.
Gentile would score again before period’s end to double the lead. Former Sea Dog Nathan Larose came up the left side of the ice and passed it across the crease, where it would be tipped in by the Eagles forward. Saint John would get on the board before period’s end though, as Aidan MacIntosh found himself alone in front of the goal after a pass from the side of the rink, and it was 2-1 Cape Breton heading into the intermission.
Fifteen minutes into the middle period it remained a tight one goal game, but the Eagles would get some insurance before period’s end. First Egor Sokolov would tip a blueline shot from Kyle Havlena to make it a 3-1 game, and then the visitors would score again in the period’s final minute. Ian Smallwood received a drop pass from Liam Kidney on the blueline and hammered a shot that redirected by D’Orio with 12 seconds left before the horn.
The Eagles would not allow Saint John back into the game in the third period, limiting the Sea Dogs to five shots. Shaun Miller would finish the scoring on the night, as he ripped a shot over the shoulder of D’Orio to make it a 5-1 score.
WIlliam Grimard turned aside 22 of 23 shots in the win, while D’Orio stopped 36 of 41 shots in the loss.
Affiliate player Daniel Thompson dressed as the backup netminder for the Screaming Eagles due to a minor injury to Kevin Mandolese. Thompson was called up form Summerside of the MHL.
The Screaming Eagles will now head to Charlottetown to conclude their two game road trip on Saturday night at 7 PM. You can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
