The Screaming Eagles hit a bump in the road on their road trip in a 7-2 loss to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
The action was fast and furious to begin their first 20 minutes of the game. Just 80 seconds into the contests, Xavier Simoneau skated behind the net, and as he was wrapping around threw the puck in front to Maxime Comtois who would give the home team the first goal of the game. Drummondville looked to have a 2-0 lead before the three minute mark on a Jarret Baker shot but the goal was called back due to a delayed offside.
Just after the seven minute mark the Voltigeurs would claim a two goal lead for real, as Gregor MacLeod tipped a pass from the front of the net from Brandon Skubel and tipped it by Kevin Mandolese. However after the Volts carried the early part of the first period, the Eagles would push back.
With MacLeod in the box for high sticking and Mandolese racing to the bench for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty, Egor Sokolov ripped a one timer by Olivier Rodrigue to get the Eagles on the board, with a two minute power play still to come. Cape Breton couldn’t score on the second power play, but not long after Mathias Laferrière put a shot through traffic and it was a tie game.
The goal came with just 3:39 left in the period but the first frame had two goals yet to come. Comtois found himself at the left side of the net in the final two minutes to give Drummondville the lead. Before period’s end, Xavier SImoneau would capitalize on a turnover by Mandolese and swept around the crease to make it a 4-2 goal game before period’s end.
Period two would begin with some four on four play- coinciding penalties meant the first 3:22 would be with both teams down a man. For nine seconds there would even be a stretch of 3 on 3.
No one took advantage of the extra ice but eight seconds after Nicolas Guay hit the back of the net to give Drummondville a 5-2 edge. The Volts had a chance to push the lead, and Comtois had the chance to earn a hat trick, but was denied on a penalty shot attempt by Mandolese.
Comtois did get his hat trick at the 6:04 mark of the third period, earning the puck off the face-off and beating Mandolese to push the score to 6-2. Guay would finish the scoring on the night, streaking up the right wing for a short handed goal.
Rodrigue stopped 22 of 24 shots in the victory while Mandolese allowed seven goals on 28 shots in the loss.
