It was another down to the wire game in an extremely competitive Eastern Conference race but the Eagles fell by a score of 3-1 to the Charlottetown Islanders after a late empty net goal.
Goals and chances were hard to come by but the home team was able to strike first in the opening period. At the 12:49 mark Mitchell Balmas sent the puck across the crease, appearing to look to pass to Shaun Miller. Instead Derek Gentile was there to put it by Matthew Welsh and make it a 1-0 score.
The Eagles had an opportunity to double the lead late in the period. With four seconds to play, Gabriel Proulx hustled through centre ice through a 1 on 2 and actually forced his way through Hunter Drew to draw a penalty shot. He skated all the way to the right boards and came back in but couldn’t beat Welsh and it was 1-0 at the break.
Just as was the case in the first period, the middle stanza would contain just one goal. Both teams failed to score on a single power play opportunity but Charlottetown would equalize at even strength with Hunter Drew jumping into the play to put a bouncy puck by Kevin Mandolese.
It was a familiar face that would score to put Charlottetown ahead in the final frame. After two goals against the Eagles on Friday night, Zachary Beauregard would tip a point shot in front of the goal to push the score to 2-1. With 2:35 remaining, Marc-André Dumont would lift Mandolese for an extra attacker, then calling a timeout at the next stoppage.
The Eagles created some chances in the dying minutes but couldn’t find a tying goal. With three seconds to play Nikita Alexandrov hit the open cage to secure the win for the visitors.
The Screaming Eagles will now get ready for their final home game of the 2018-19 season when they host the Saint John Sea Dogs on Wednesday night. Puck drop is at 7 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
