Eagles Earn Point In Shootout Loss To Sea Dogs

  Shootout goals by MacKenzie Brown and Jakub Izacky led the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 2-1 shootout victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in front of 3,584 fans on hand at Harbour Station on Saturday night.

   Izacky also scored in regulation for the Sea Dogs, who improve to 19-25-0-0 on the season.

   Justin Haché had the lone goal for the Screaming Eagles, who fall to 9-29-3-5 on the year.

  Cape Breton got the scoring started in the game as Justin Haché  buried his fourth goal of the season on the power play at 10:48 of the first period, Stephen Midensky and Bronson Beaton were given the assists.

  The Sea Dogs would answer at 10:56 of the third period to tie the game at one as Jakub Izacky scored his 14th goal of the season beating Screaming Eagles goaltender David Honzik, Maxime Villemaire picked up the lone helper on the goal.

  After an overtime period solved nothing, despite Cape Breton out shooting Saint John 6-0, Michael Clarke opened the shootout with a goal beating Sébastien Auger, before MacKenzie Brown and Jakub Izacky were able to find the back of the net beating David Honzik. Auger shut the door from there stopping Cape Breton’s final two chances by Charles-Eric Légaré and Bronson Beaton.

  Auger made 32 saves in the win for Saint John, his record improves to 19-19-0-0, while Honzik turned aside 32 of 33 shots in the loss for Cape Breton, his record falls to 2-12-0-1.

  The Screaming Eagles and Sea Dogs will meet again on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7pm at Centre 200. Tickets are still available for the game.

Not in the lineup for Cape Breton: Loic Leduc (Lower Body), John-Michael Walsh (Broken Arm), Kyle Farrell (Concussion), Jakub Culek (Upper Body) and William Carrier (Lower Body).

Not in the lineup for Saint John: Forwards, Jonathan Huberdeau (NHL, Florida Panthers) and Connor Donaghey (Upper Body) along with defensemen Steven Duda, David Weckworth (Lower Body) and Jurij Repe (Broken Hand).

Malone Faces Former Team: Saint John Sea Dogs right winger Brett Malone faced his former team in the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday night. Malone, 18, was placed on waivers by Cape Breton on January 7th. The Shawinigan Cataractes picked up Malone off waivers and traded him to Saint John for a 10th round pick at the 2014 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft on January 8th.  Malone had one hit in the game.
