The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have hired Dartmouth native, Jake Grimes, as the team’s Head Coach. Grimes brings more than three decades of experience to the Eagles and will start his official duties with the team this weekend at the QMJHL Draft in Quebec City on June 8th, 2019.
Grimes has an impressive background as both a coach and player. For the past 15 years, he has coached within the Ontario Hockey League. Most recently, he held the Associate Coach position with the Guelph Storm, where he helped earn an OHL Championship and a birth in the Memorial Cup Tournament in Halifax. Other notable coaching achievements include two conference championships and appearances in six conference finals, two league finals, two Memorial Cups and four medals at the U17 World Championships. Grimes career as a player included three seasons with the Ottawa Senators Organization.
“We are thrilled to have a fellow Nova Scotian join our team! Jake brings vast experience, passion and an unwavering commitment to win to the Eagles organization,” says Irwin D. Simon, Chair of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Board of Directors. “When I became the majority shareholder of the Eagles, I promised the community that I would build a team that wins. I commend our President, Gerard Shaw, and his staff on the work they’ve done to date, including getting the team to playoffs this past season. Jake has a strong record of leading teams to finals and recruiting him as our Head Coach puts us in a solid position as we head into our new season. I look forward to showing Jake a warm, Cape Breton welcome!”
The announcement of Head Coach comes less than three weeks after the appointments of Jacques Carrier as General Manager, Hockey Operations and John Hanna as Assistant General Manager, Hockey Operations.
“Aside from Jake’s extensive experience as both a coach and a player, he is highly respected by his peers in the hockey world and is praised for his ability to develop players,” says Jacques Carriere, General Manager – Hockey Operations, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. “From the beginning of our search, Jake stood out as a front runner. We couldn’t be happier to welcome him back to Nova Scotia.”
“Throughout my career, I always kept a close eye on what Nova Scotian teams were up to. This is an exciting time for the Eagles organization. With so much momentum and positive changes happening, now is the right time to return to my home province,” says Jake Grimes, Head Coach, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. “Our players are showing a lot of promise on the ice. It’s going to be a great year!”
